If you haven’t guessed by now, I really dig letters. Unfortunately, it seems that letter-making practices —not to mention the role that these disciplines play in contemporary design— are often overlooked or neglected in education. I suppose that’s why I teach.
The understanding and application of lettering and typography is not only relevant to visual communication—it’s vital. Guiding students in creating distinctive lettering solutions promotes the investigation of new ideas and unexplored creative processes. My goal is to help young designers develop varied yet balanced methodologies which emphasize seeking the best result, no matter what the means of production.
Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to teach alongside some extremely talented friends like Andy Cruz, Christian Schwartz, Tal Leming and Ben Kiel. Above all, we’ve endeavored to challenge each of our students to craft engaging yet practical contributions to graphic design.
