When my friend Marc Salinas invited me to conduct a workshop in Valencia during the spring of 2010, he asked if I’d also like to design the nameplate for the inaugural issue of the magazine to be published in conjunction with the conference. Given that the name refers to a particular scribal hand, I figured that consulting the work of Spanish calligraphers might be a good place to start. I soon became enamored by the quirky pen work, especially lifts of the pen which created a curious broken effect in some writing specimens. Exaggerating the weight, proportions and composition of the letterforms served to further bastardize the mark.

That’s conference assistant, Modesto, peepin’ the magazine fresh off the presses.
