Pre-Fab Faces: Designing with Your Own Ready-Made Letters

Every now again it’s time to give your overworked “go-to” fonts a break. Even without a budget to hire a professional letterer, designers can still lend a unique look to communication systems and design campaigns by manually composing headlines and word-marks with custom prefabricated letterforms.

The rich typographic heritage of Boston served as a backdrop for participants as they turned pencil renderings into practical stock lettering. A slide presentation, drawing demonstration and digitizing tips helped attendees in taking their letters from sketch phase to assembly-ready outlines.
