Type Camp 2012, Day 1
This June I was finally able to join Shelley Gruendler and Tiffany Wardle at Type Camp in Templeton, CA. The challenge was to present the basics of typeface design through practical hands-on exercises, without the aid of font editing software.

For the first assignment, participants drew overtop of their broad-edge pen writing, modifying the letterforms while variables such as weight, width and contrast were explored. After a few potential directions were determined, students hashed out a select character set and hand-assembled test specimens to evaluate the strength of their designs. The final exercise of the week would build on the ideas developed during this initial exercise.

Summer 2012 Workshops

If you haven’t decided what to do during your downtime this summer, check out this pair of back-to-back bicoastal workshops I’m conducting in June.

First, I’ll be laying down the basics of display typeface design at TypeCamp from June 3–8 in Templeton, CA. We’ll explore design fundamentals and hands-on letter-making exercises during this week-long analog bonanza.

Then, I’m back in NYC at Cooper Union from June 12–15 for some logotype lettering instruction. Putting pencil to paper, we’ll cover the foundations of hand-lettered logo design over the course of four action-packed days.

Sign up now and kick off the summer right by cranking out some custom letterforms—registration is still open for both workshops!

Plus, keep your eyes peeled for forthcoming House stationery like the notepad shown above. In the meantime, acquaint yourself with some other fine House Industries offerings.
