Stencil Workshop at Cooper Union
Next month I’ll be conducting a hands-on introductory typeface design workshop in NYC. Escape from aggravating software-troubleshooting headaches and the mind-numbing tedium of point-plotting; instead, get ready to roll up your sleeves and dirty yer mitts. During this two-day weekend seminar, participants will take a practical approach to type design by drawing, fabricating and implementing their own set of stencil letters. And while we may not get into the nitty-gritty of font editing, the basics of digital typography will be covered. Have a look at the results from the stencil workshop at Type Camp last June. Studio Lettering in Eye Magazine
My trio of Studio Lettering script typefaces was featured in an Eye Magazine article by Paul Shaw and Abby Goldstein entitled The Line of Beauty. The authors had these kind words to say about one of the fonts, “[Studio Lettering] Sable is a beautiful pointed brush script that marries elegance and informality.” Check out issue 83 for yourself.

Keep your eyes peeled for a bunch of workshops that I’m conducting in Philadelphia and New York this Fall.
Things get cookin’ on Saturday, September 29 at Philadelphia University. Lettering for Design will not only cover drawing basics, but also emphasize the application of hand-lettering in various design contexts.
Next, Cooper Union will host a pair of weekend seminars in conjunction with the school’s typeface design program. Drawn Letters will highlight the advantages of hand-letttering over conventional typography.
Finally, I’m back at Cooper for a good ol’ hands-on stencil lettering workshop that will introduce concepts fundamental to typeface design. Register now while seats are available!
